HOW TO ORGANIZE SD CARDS: A SIMPLE SYSTEM FOR PHOTOGRAPHERS

Note: Commissions may be earned from the links below.

You only need a few rules to never lose track of your cards again.

One good card case
Hard shell, waterproof, holds SD plus microSD.
One case = one routine.

Use orientation system, not labels
Label up → empty / ready
Label down → used / do not format

No stickers. No overthinking.

Group by memory size
Keep 64GB with 64GB, 128GB with 128GB.
You’ll grab the card you need without thinking.

Throw away problem cards
If a card ever begins to glitch, mark it and downgrade it.
You can use it for tests and firmware updates only — never important work.

One rule after every shoot
A card only goes back to use after:

  • All files are copied

  • All files are backed up

This is a reliable safety check.

Keep a few clean spares elsewhere
Two or three cards in your kit/camera bag.
Peace of mind in the event that something unexpected happens.

I can’t stress enough how important a card case is. It’s a small thing, but it keeps your cards protected, organized, and always easy to reach. One card case. Label up / label down. Retire bad cards. That’s it. simple, reliable.

As always, best of luck!
