A GENTLE PHOTO CHALLENGE FOR THE NEW YEAR

Note: Commissions may be earned from the links below.

Happy New Year to you! Now that the holidays have settled, this quick exercise is a calm way to ease back into shooting. It’s a simple challenge that helps you see your day through your camera’s eyes and notice the smaller details that often go overlooked.

How to Get Started

1. Morning
Photograph one or two quiet moments that start your day—steam from your coffee, soft light through your curtains, the texture of your sheets.

2. Midday
Capture something from your routine: your desk, the street, your lunch, or anything with interesting light, texture, or movement.

3. Evening
As the light gets softer, look for moodier moments—lamps, reflections, or small rituals that close out your day.

4. Details
Throughout the day, pause for close-ups: shadows, textures, and small objects you’d normally overlook.

A Few Things to Keep in Mind

  • Keep your camera light and simple.

  • Play with angles — low, high, unexpected.

  • Don’t overthink it; shoot what catches your eye.

  • Keep your camera close throughout the day.

This exercise is a gentle way to ease back into creativity and see your day with fresh eyes.

As always, best of luck!
