CREATIVE REFLECTION: WHEN IMPERFECTION CREATES ATMOSPHERE IN PHOTOGRAPHY

It has been a few months since my last blog post. Between teaching, photographing, and balancing multiple projects, writing quietly slipped to the side for a bit. But I wanted to return by sharing a small creative reflection inspired by this image.

I am often much more drawn to photographs with distortion, heavy shadow, uneven light, reflections, or even a sense of visual confusion. Sometimes those elements create far more atmosphere than a perfectly polished image ever could.

With this image, I intentionally leaned into that feeling.

Reflections, deep contrast, glowing highlights, overexposure, and dark shadows all helped create something that feels less literal and more atmospheric. Rather than clearly presenting every object, I wanted the light and texture to shape the mood of the image.

In photography, sharpness and clarity are often treated as the goal. But atmosphere can be just as important.

Just sharing a thought — sometimes a photograph becomes more interesting when parts of it begin to fall apart a little.

As always, best of luck!
